Racism and civilizational chauvinism

I started watching this video for one reason, and ended up being fascinated by it for another reason altogether.

In the 1960s, white conservatives tended to believe that white people were racially superior to others, while white liberals tended to believe (or at least say they believed) that people of any race, creed, or color could attain the same level of civilization that white people had attained (I know what some of you are thinking right now—hold that thought).

Though written and produced in Japan, this video is an excellent reflection of that white American liberal position on race, made more interesting by also reflecting the high point of modernism. The civilizational chauvinism in the film is tastefully done.

In the 1970s, a radical position (for white Europeans and Americans) started appearing in the mainstream: Maybe the civilization created by white people should not be the standard by which to measure all civilizations.

One thing we've seen in the last eight or nine years is how radical that position still is for the majority of white Americans, even many liberals.
