On this Memorial Day, I remember my relatives who died in the service of our country:

In Memoriam: Nahum Badcock (first cousin of g-g-g-g-g-grandmother), of Knox’s Regiment of Artillery of the Continental Army, who died at Fort Crown Point in New York on July 6, 1776.

In Memoriam: Benjamin Badcock, Jr (first cousin of g-g-g-g-g-grandmother), of the 6th Massachusetts Regiment of the Continental Army, who died in or shortly after the Second Battle of Saratoga in October 1777.

In Memoriam: Darius Spafford (g-g-g-g-g-g-uncle), of the 24th Regiment of the Connecticut Militia, who died in the Battle of Wyoming on July 3, 1778.

In Memoriam: John J. Akin (g-g-g-uncle), of the 75th Illinois Infantry, who died in the Battle of Perryville on October 8, 1862.

In Memoriam: Lucas Burnham (g-g-g-g-uncle), of the 95th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, who died of disease on July 23, 1863 in Walnut Hills, Mississippi while on duty in the Vicksburg campaign. He is buried in Vicksburg National Cemetery.

In Memoriam: James H. McCafferty (g-g-g-g-uncle) of the 42nd Indiana Infantry, who died of disease on March 13, 1865 in a New York City hospital. He is buried in Cypress Hills National Cemetery.

In Memoriam: George Lee McCafferty (second cousin of grandfather) of the U.S. Army Infantry, who died of pneumonia on May 2, 1942 in a Japanese prisoner of war camp in the Philippines. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Corsicana, Texas.

In Memoriam: Royal Percival Hervey, Junior (second cousin of grandfather) of the U.S. Army Air Force, who was starved to death by his Japanese captors in 1942 during the Bataan Death March in the Philippines. His recovered remains are buried in Moran Cemetery in Moran, Texas.

In Memoriam: Arthur Charles Pickett (second cousin of grandmother) of the 339th Bombardment Squadron of the U.S. Army Air Force, whose B-17 bomber was shot down over Hainaut, Belgium on October 20, 1943. He is buried in the Netherlands American cemetery in Margarten, The Netherlands.

In Memoriam: Henry Siegel Vaughan, Junior (third cousin of grandfather) of the 91st Infantry Division of the U.S. Army, who died on September 18, 1944 from wounds suffered during the assault on Il Goigo Pass, south of Firenzuola, Italy. He is buried in Rock Island National Cemetery in Rock Island, Illinois.

In Memoriam: Jimmie Reed Smith (second cousin of great-grandfather) of the 1st Division of the U.S. Marine Corps, who was killed in action on June 19, 1951 in Korea.
