Five from the Fifties

With a little help from MOJO (tip: older editions are just as good as the newest one), I have been listening lately to vocal jazz / pop from the Fifties. Here are my five favorite songs so far:

  1. "Don't Smoke in Bed" by Nina Simone. Her intense vocal style is a taste I have not yet acquired, but it works for me on this song. [Available on iTunes, "Little Girl Blue" album]

  2. "When I Fall in Love" by Nat King Cole. Lush, pretty. [Available on iTunes]

  3. "Ace in the Hole" by Ella Fitzgerald. Her voice makes a beautiful sound, and I enjoy the way she has fun with this song by Cole Porter. [Available on iTunes, "The Cole Porter Soundbook" album]

  4. "Old Devil Moon" by Frank Sinatra. It's cool and it swings. [Available on iTunes, "Songs for Swinging Lovers" album]

  5. "Whatever Lola Wants" by Sarah Vaughan. Um. Wow. [Available on iTunes, "Sarah Vaughan's Golden Hits" album]
